AIESEC Life Explores Colombia: A Journey of Culture, Adventure, and Connection
By Mark Wheeler and Alicia Wheeler

AIESEC Life just wrapped up an exhilarating nine-day Study Tour through Colombia, and what a journey it was!   With 22 adventurous participants, we immersed ourselves in this incredible country's vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and rich history.  Every day was packed with new experiences—exploring dynamic cities, savoring diverse flavors, dancing to local rhythms, and stepping out of our comfort zones.  This was AIESEC adventuring at its finest.

A City-Hopping Adventure

Our journey began in Cartagena, a seaside gem on the Caribbean coast, where colonial charm meets Afro-Caribbean influences.  We wandered the colorful streets, soaking in the city’s history and coastal beauty.  From there, we moved on to Barranquilla, hometown of Shakira, where we marveled at the striking “Window to the World” monument as well her 21’ bronze statue on the beach.

Next up was Santa Marta, where a city tour led by a former military medic—whose humor was as sharp as his knowledge—gave us a deep dive into local life.  Our adventure continued in Palomino, where we had the rare opportunity to visit the Indigenous community, Comunidad Arhuaca Katanzama, a profoundly moving and spiritual experience for us all.  Even their Chief came out to speak and take us through some ceremonies of gratefulness.

We made our way back to Santa Marta through the breathtaking Tayrona National Park before flying to Medellín for the final leg of our trip.  We explored this vibrant city for three days, witnessing its transformation from a history marked by violence to a future driven by tourism, art, and innovation.

Tasting Colombia: A Culinary Journey

Lucky for us, Colombia’s rich culture isn’t just seen—it’s tasted.  Our tour guides led us on a flavorful journey through the country’s diverse cuisine.  From street food vendors to top-tier restaurants, we sampled it all.  Some highlights included:

  • A seven-course meal in Cartagena, each dish a work of art and cultural significance.

  • A rooftop Alumnite Crepe and Waffles dinner including AIESEC Colombia founder Oscar Rodriguez-Aguilar!

  • A seafood feast in Santa Marta that had some of us covering the fish heads with tomato slices.

  • Authentic street food in Palomino, bringing us closer to local flavors.

  • Unforgettable fine dining at singer Karol G’s restaurant in Medellín, shared with more local AIESEC alumni.

Nature’s Playground: Colombia’s Stunning Landscapes

Colombia’s beauty is as diverse as its culture, and we experienced it firsthand:

  • A high-speed boat ride whisked us to the stunning Rosario Islands, where crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches awaited.

  • A hike through Tayrona National Park led us to Cabo San Juan del Guía Beach, where we swam and snorkeled in paradise.

  • In Guatapé, some climbed the 700+ steps of El Penol for jaw-dropping views, while others opted for a helicopter tour, soaring over the breathtaking landscape.

  • In Medellín, we explored the lush Parque Arví, a sanctuary of tropical flora and fauna and we were treated to a surprise picnic prepared by the local Indigenous community

  • A trip to Colombia would not be complete without a tour of a coffee farm and flower plantation, deepening our appreciation for Colombia’s agricultural traditions.

An Unforgettable Experience

This  journey wouldn’t have been possible without our exceptional team of guides from Nacion Panche.  Their warmth, deep knowledge, and passion for sharing Colombia’s culture made every moment extraordinary. Our farewell testimonials at the flower farm were a testament to the friendships, memories, and experiences that will stay with us forever.

Nine days, five cities, and countless experiences—our Colombian adventure was magical.

Until next time, ¡Viva Colombia! 🇨🇴
