For 75 years, AIESEC has been shaping the future by investing in the potential of young people and creating a global network of change-makers. Through our 75th event promotion and sponsorship opportunities, we have received some special stories from alumni.
Linda Maver (above) from AIESEC Long Beach 1983-88 has generously donated to the 75th celebration and has written the following to share with us:
So I never planned to go to Japan that summer of 1986. My feet were firmly pointed towards Europe. I was studying German. But ever since my freshman year at Cal State Long Beach, I had heard of the special relationship we had with AIESEC Doshisha. There was a growing eagerness from Doshisha to address the bitter trade friction between our two countries. After all, we were the future leaders of our countries. The award-winning project that emerged had two parts: first a delegation of Japanese AIESECers came to California, and then 30 of us from the Western United States went to Japan. Both sides provided homestays for everyone. There were formal, yet lively debates during the day and parties with various themes at night. AIESEC's "work hard, play hard" theme was at its best. It was beyond amazing to see everyone's depth of understanding grow, as we prepared ourselves to meet, shared our culture and business practices, and learned to speak each other's languages as best we could. I can still write my name in Japanese, by the way.
It was through this project that my professional interest and knowledge in the global high-tech industry came alive. There was rigorous preparation to present my debate group's position, but I absolutely loved what I was doing. I went on to have a high-tech AIESEC internship in (West) Germany and, over the years, several more high-tech-type jobs when I returned to California. A special benefit of this project has been a few of us getting together every couple of years to welcome one of the Japanese organizers to Los Angeles. He would be flying through LA on business trips, so it was a chance to share a meal and some conversation with old friends. The most recent gathering was in 2017. He and his lovely wife had just dropped off their son to study at an American university -- talk about coming full circle! As I know firsthand, there is an incredible joy to see your adult children explore the world as they strive to make it a better place

Thank you to Linda and other alumni for recently donating to our 75th Celebration Fund. Money raised will be used to cover the costs of students attending the celebration.
When asked why she donated to the 75th?
“There are 100 heartfelt reasons for me to show my support,” said Maver. “I have many good memories of how AIESEC shaped me both professionally and personally. It is an amazing organization whose impact keeps on rolling to make the world a better place”.
