Alumni Spotlight: Leading Gender Diversity in Business

Hillary Clinton, World Cup Champion soccer midfielder Megan Rapinoe and AIESEC alumn Lori Nishiura
Mackenzie at a roundtable discussion on pay equality (Apr 12, 2016).

Lori Nishiura Mackenzie joined AIESEC at UC Berkley as a freshman, became LCP by her sophomore year and was elected to AIESEC U.S. as student director the following year.  She really got hooked on AIESEC when she was selected for the AIESEC U.S. International Congress delegation in Sweden in 1986 explaining, “I felt so alive. I had never been around people from that many countries before. I remember thinking that we could really change the world.” Following that experience, Lori was elected as AIESEC U.S. National Committee President and then travelled to six countries as the regional development officer for Asia Pacific.

While working at AIESEC U.S., Lori fundraised from Apple Computer and when she connected with them after AIESEC, they offered her a role in employee communications for Asia, Latin America and Canada. Lori explained, “It was hard to think about getting a normal job after traveling the world and having so much agency to act independently. The job with Apple was so international -- it was fantastic, but there were also some moments of terror!”

A Warm Goodbye to Julie Barnett

We are sad to share news of the recent passing of Julie Barnett.  Julie was the wife and strong supporter of Norman Barnett, one of the early and very dynamic leaders of AIESEC U.S. and Columbia Business School graduate.  Norman was a driving force who influenced the entire international organization starting in the late 1950s. It was thanks to Norman's determination and effective negotiating skills that a permanent secretariat was created in Geneva.

Fellow AIESEC alumn, Bernd Thomas, initiated the Norman Barnett Project Award at IC80 in Chicago and relaunched it with the help of Julie at IC 2006 in Warsaw.  Many of Norman’s AIESEC friends have fond memories of Julie and her strong support of Norman’s passion for AIESEC. I think we can all agree that we owe much gratitude to our spouses whose understanding of our love of AIESEC allows us to remain committed to this wonderful organization.
